Red, white, blue, green, black abstract art work, Marie Cruess

Marie Cruess Artwork

Here are four abstract paintings by Marie Gleason Cruess (spouse of William V. Cruess), and also her portrait of William Cruess. The portrait used to hang in the lobby of Cruess Hall. Marie had a solo show at SF MOMA, August 12-25, 1940 (pg. 42). The tags on the back of the abstract paintings reference their inclusion in a December 2-31,1961 show at SF Museum of Art (pg. 142). You can learn more about William and Marie Cruess's life together and see more examples of Marie's art on the History page of Cruess Wine (used by kind permission of Alissa Lind.)

In March 2025, the Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art formally accepted the white painting and the small blue-and-red painting into their permanent art collection.
